Free to download, Z Camera is an app that is designed to make your photography that little bit better when it is captured from your smart device. The app is able to offer plenty of options which you can view before you take your snap, as opposed to software which alters the appearance of photos after they are taken. Some in app purchases are available after you start using it.

Live filters and collage effects at hand

This app has been rated as the 'Best App of 2015' on Google Play in well over 70 territories, the publishers claim. Fast to use, it is rated as Pegi 3 so just about anyone can learn how to utilise all of its features. The software is designed for a quick start up so you can switch to it from your phone's normal camera functions immediately – ideal for when something pops up which you just have to capture an image of rapidly. For example, there are a number of live filters that you can choose from, each designed to provide optimal results in differing light conditions. If you are outside and something worth shooting is a head of you, but the sun is making the image difficult to capture, then a well-chosen live filter will help you to compose your shot better. There's also a handy beauty camera option which is great for when you want to take a selfie and to perhaps cover up some blemishes on your skin. Other options, like classic collage, allow you to bring multiple images together into something that is ideal for posting to social media sites and various configurations of your pics are allowed for.

Easy to use and well designed

Using Z Camera is pretty easy and the user interface is fairly well designed with most of the options being obvious from the first time you see them. However, some of the advanced options require you to pay for them. That's okay for those who wish to do so, but the user experience in the freely available version is interrupted too often by pop up adverts. Some of the post production options can also be found elsewhere in other phone apps and things like the filters available for photo editing are simply nothing new and don't offer a great deal of value. In addition, options such as the HDR function, which improves pictures captured in low-light or backlit conditions, is already to be found as standard on many camera phones. The app does deliver better in real time filters as well as some of its fun editing options which allows users to beautify their pics with emoji, doodles and by adding text. Furthermore, the tilt-shift function is handy for you to fully control lens blur to perfection – a superb option if you want to create arty shots or remove something unwanted from the background of a scene.

A good one, but mind the ads!

This app offers some good functions but is let down by too many 'also ran' options found elsewhere. The adverts also start to be frustrating after only just a few minutes usage. Switching between video and photo options is child's play, on the plus side.
